After engaging within the week 8 lecture I took the time to examine my analytical framework through participatory media cultures. What I have been most interested in was the belief that play is effective and lucrative, which confirms my view on the benefits of gaming. Participation is required to make meaning. Interacting with games can be productive in the way that individuals can improve their cognition in a means of strengthening memory and problem-solving skills. So, the notion that games can be seen as unproductive is not completely valid.
Prensky’s 2006 book is an expert in interactive learning and education, how computer games can be instructional instruments as well as learning opportunities of their own. This book is a valuable guide for researchers looking to learn about computer gaming, and it explores many facets of video games. Prensky aims to inspire parents to invite their children to play games by explaining what they are and how they can influence the minds of young people. He coined the term “digital native” in one of his earlier novels and used it here to categorise those who had grown up with games. He believed that parents are visitors to these games, while gamers are local, and that their thoughts and actions are different because of this. The basic chapters included in this paper deal with the proof that games can transform brains, that brains can potentially “re-wire” themselves, and the proof that games tend to promote and advance learning. Another study that furthered my philosophy in video games was Kevin’s (2011) study focused on students in a world history class at a high school level. Students with differing degrees of exposure to computer games engaged in a historical game based on the content learned in the classroom. The study found that simulation gameplay can improve cognitive understanding and encourage higher-order thinking. Overall these studies motivated me as I saw it was possible and ethical to promote the correct games as there is scientific proof that they can improve cognitive ability.
To gain feedback around my blog post I started by creating tweets and Reddit posts that would gain an audience to give me feedback. My Redditt posts were deleted however I was quite successful on Twitter. I am considering doing a survey however if I can continue to gain feedback on Twitter I will. I look forward to seeing what my audience recommends for me to do next or to see their reaction to my next post.
