Through the process of developing and researching for my DA, I made some changes to the idea of my topic. Most notably, I changed my angle from studying the evolution (or lack thereof) of gender representation in video games to focus more on the audience experience. I hope this can be a more positive take on the topic that is more enjoyable for an audience, as well as addressing key issues to hope for change in future.
I have also started developing my analytical framework around Jesper Juul’s book, Half Real, which discusses games as real things which create a fictional world. This is relevant to my topic as I am trying to understand user experience in different said fictional worlds, how the player, the world and the game relate, and what rules, interface, story and design shape the user experience, specifically in terms of representation through characters.
