My DA will explore how mindfulness and gaming go hand-in-hand in a number of different ways, including exploring the use of mindfulness to improve the gaming experience and using gaming as a form of mindfulness.

Mindfulness is a mental state achieved by focusing one’s awareness on the present moment, while calmly acknowledging and accepting one’s feelings, thoughts, and bodily sensations, used as a therapeutic technique.

There’s existing research that explores this area of interest, including research into how digital games can improve mindfulness, what does it mean to be a mindful gamer and how mindfulness games can improve attention.

My DA is aimed at gamers who are looking to incorporate mindfulness practices into their routine to help improve their mood, stress and feelings – especially when it comes to gaming. These mindfulness techniques and resources can also be used outside of gaming to help remain…

  1. Hey Grace,
Sounds like you have a clear and concise direction for your digital artefact. The topic of mindfulness and gaming is an exceptional topic to further investigate as meditation has become increasingly popular in today’s society. There is a significant amount of research and new articles correlating between the cognitive effects of games and how they can damage/ improve one’s health.

I would suggest you look into the negative effects of games and what impact they have on the brain so that you have a solid aim and meaning behind your DA for your audience. This would be great to further your investigation into the impact games are having on the mind. Hannah Nicoles (2017) has an amazing paper on how video games affect the brain, her paper exams many scholarly articles and applies the results into a well-constructed text.

With meditation being one of your main focuses I have found many interesting articles on the release of new games that have the influence to calm one down. Three of these include Hocus, Alto’s Adventure and Monument Valley. The reason these games are considered to have a more chill vibe is that they do not have and timer or a certain amount of lives. These are trigger points that are considered to put the player in a state of panic (Tapus, 2015). I strongly believe you should give your own opinion on how you felt after playing a game designed to calm the mind and one that is considered high stress e.g. Dark Souls, and report the characteristics of how you felt before, during and after for some insight to your readers.
I am genuinely in love with the idea of your DA and cannot wait to see it start moving, good luck!! Laura
